SLHS Craft Fair Moved

Due to school construction, the 28th annual Spanaway Lake High School Craft fair will be held at Graham-Kapowsin High School. The craft fair runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 14 and from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 15.

Jr. High Dance

The All District Jr. High Dance will be this Friday, Nov. 6th in the Bethel High School cafeteria from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door and all proceeds will go to the Bethel Booster/PTSA.

Mini-Orchestra Festival

H1N1 Vaccine Shortage

The Health Department H1N1/Swine Flu Clinic scheduled for Nov. 1 at Bethel High School has been canceled due to a lack of vaccine. The Bethel Clinic was supposed to be the second of six school-based H1N1/Swine Flu clinics held by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

Ride the School Bus

This week, Bethel bus drivers will be trying to get an accurate count of how many students take the bus. Students, who are regularly transported to and from school, are encouraged to ride during the official "bus count week." State funding for transportation is determined, in part, by how many students need busing. About 55% of Bethel's transportation costs are covered by the State. The rest is funded by the School Programs and Operations Levy. The "bus count week" ends Oct. 30.

Groundbreaking set for Nov. 5

An alternative in student education is breaking new ground in Pierce County. Starting next fall, the Pierce County Skills Center will open its doors to students interested in developing their future careers, while still in high school.

Education and business partners will kick off the new school at a special groundbreaking ceremony next week. The ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 5th at the site of the new Pierce County Skills Center, 5512 161st Street East in Puyallup.

Frederickson Elementary School Dedication

The Frederickson Elementary School Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. This new elementary school is located at 17418 74th Avenue East. The public is invited to come and tour this new elementary school. Frederickson Elementary is one of three new school campuses that opened this fall in Bethel School District.

Lockdown ended at Bethel High School

Activities at Bethel High School have resumed following a brief lockdown. The campus was shut down at 2:00 p.m. because of an alleged threat made to a student. The lockdown was lifted fifteen minutes later. The Bethel School District takes all threats very seriously and will continue to whatever it takes to keep our students safe.

Cadets make strides against breast cancer

Eleven members of Bethel High School’s 62nd Braves Squadron Air Force Junior ROTC recently served their community by volunteering at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk at Wright Park in Tacoma.

Graham-Kapowsin’s Renaissance Class Shines

Students in Graham-Kapowsin High School's Renaissance class recently held a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness & Research at the Safeway store in Graham. The students helped with craft and bake sales, root beer floats, hot chocolate and hot cider. Some even got in "the cage" to help raise money. The Graham community demonstrated strong support for the project by helping the class raise $1045.00 in six hours.

Bethel school board election

This fall, voters will decide the fate of two key races for the Bethel School Board. The Board provides significant oversight and sets the policy and direction of the school district. This year positions one and three are open. For position one, voters will choose between Ken Blair and Ron Morehouse. Two candidates, Bob Etteldorf and Marianne Lincoln are running for position three. For information on candidates and state ballot measures, please visit the Pierce County Election's Web site. Election Day is Nov. 3.

Free Immunizations

Due to an unprecedented response, Bethel School District will host another back to school vaccination and flu immunization clinic on Monday, Oct. 5. Students age 4 to 18 that attend Bethel Schools can get free immunizations from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Camas Prairie Elementary in Spanaway. To participate, parents and guardians must be present and a copy of the child's shot record is required.

SLHS hosts college, career fair & back to school night

Spanaway Lake High School will hold a Back-to-School/College and Career Night for families on Tuesday, Sept. 29. At the event, parents can visit their student's classes, while students meet with a variety of colleges, universities, military recruiters and local employers. The event runs from 6:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Late Start Day

To provide better instruction, all Bethel Schools will hold a few Late Start Days during the 2009-10 school year. The first Late Start Day will be Wednesday, September 23. On this day, all schools and bus routes will begin two hours later that their regularly scheduled times. AM kindergarten students will attend school all day; there will be no PM kindergarten classes.

Free Immunization Clinic

Back by popular demand the district will be hosting another FREE immunization clinic. Students age 4 to 18 that attend Bethel Schools can get free back to school immunizations and flu shots this Thursday, September 24 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Education Services Center. The ESC is located at 516 - 176th Street East in Spanaway. To participate, families will need to present a copy of their child’s immunization records.

Cheer Clinic

The Spanaway Junior High cheerleaders will hold a junior cheer clinic in late September. Children ages 4 through 11 will learn the basics of cheering and perform at a varsity Warrior football game on Oct. 1.

Bethel School District is working in partnership with the Pierce County Health Department to monitor and prepare for possible cases of the seasonal flu and the H1N1 (swine) flu.

To help protect students and staff, we will be periodically disinfecting high traffic areas throughout the school day. Additional supplies of hand sanitizer and masks have been purchased in case we experience an outbreak of the flu.

A Mary Bridge Mobile Immunization Clinic will provide free immunizations for students on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Educational Services Center (ESC), located at 516- 176th Street East in Spanaway. The clinic will provide immunizations to all children from birth through 18 years that are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
