School Closure Updates

March 16, 2012

The Bethel School District has explored the possibility of consolidating programs at the junior high/middle school level and asked a committee to review consolidations/closures as a potential budget reduction.

At their Feb. 28 meeting, the Board approved, by a 3-1 margin, the committee’s recommendation to make NO closures at middle level schools. That means all six of the district’s junior highs will remain open next year. The committee was comprised of principals and community members from each of the affected schools.

At the same meeting, the Board of Directors authorized the closure of the Bethel Online Academy, a school that offered online educational opportunities to students. One major reason for the closure was a change in state funding that resulted in about a $600,000 deficit for the program’s operation. Since online schooling is an effective tool for learning, the district remains committed to finding another viable model to offer online services that is much more cost effective.
