Elementary Battle of the Books

May 09, 2013

The Eleventh Annual Elementary Battle of the Books will take place this evening, Thursday, May 9, at 7:00 pm, in the gymnasium at Cougar Mountain Middle School (5108 260th Street East in Graham).  Come join the Battle Teams from all of our elementary schools!

Battle of the Books is a fun, academic based competition.  The program is designed to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase comprehension, and to promote academic excellence.  Based on a radio show in Chicago, Battle of the Books encourages students to read a variety of books and remember information about plots, characters, settings, and themes.

Here’s how it works: students choose to read a minimum of five books from a list of sixteen pre-selected books (the Evergreen Young Adult Book Award, the Sasquatch Award, and the Young Reader’s Choice Award).  These students discuss the books, quiz each other on the contents, and then compete in teams to correctly answer questions based on the books in a “quiz show” format.

The Battle Teams that will compete at the district level at Cougar Mountain Middle School on May 9 are the winning teams from each of their building competitions.  Teams will receive a point for each correct answer, and the team with the most points will be declared the champion.

You are not going to want to miss the Elementary Battle of the Books!
