Student Assistance Program

The Student Assistance Program, or SAP, works collaboratively with students, families and district staff to reduce the impact of alcohol, tobacco and drug use on academic, social and emotional development. In cooperation with the Puget Sound Educational Services District, SAP counselors provide a wide range of services, including: individual student contacts and support groups, consultations with school staff, classroom lessons and school-wide prevention activities.

Program goals:

  • Reduce student risk for use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Strengthen healthy attitudes, positive decision making skills and provide clear standards for behavior.
  • Provide referral and support services for students and families.
  • Provide education for parents, schools and community.

Student Assistance Professionals:

  • Provide an array of counseling and individual and family interventions to intervene on a student's substance use.
  • Facilitate peer support groups to address student and/or family substance abuse.
  • Coordinate and make referrals for treatment to community providers.
  • Strengthen transition back to school for students who are recovering from addiction.
  • Provide school-wide prevention activities that promote healthy messages and decrease substance abuse.
  • Conduct family outreach services to increase awareness, education, and parent involvement in early intervention.

How do students access SAP?
Students can receive SAP services in three ways:

  1. Self-referral
  2. Teacher, parent or friend referral
  3. School referral. Students who are caught in violation of the school’s alcohol and drug policies may be asked to participate in SAP.
