ELEMENTARY
In fourth, fifth, or sixth grade elementary students may begin an orchestra instrument such as violin, viola, cello, or bass. Konstantin Avakyan teaches students at Camas Prairie, Evergreen, and Naches Trail. Orchestra specialist Christopher Burns works with students at Pioneer Valley, Shining Mountain, and Thompson. Orchestra specialist Jerilynn Harris-Kilgore teaches students at Centennial, Elk Plain, Rocky Ridge, and Roy. Music specialist Sheli Morrell also works with the orchestra students at Spanaway Elementary. Orchestra specialist April Whyte directs students at Frederickson, Graham, Kapowsin, Nelson, and North Star.
JUNIOR HIGH
Junior high students may begin orchestra instruction or continue their studies on violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Konstantin Avakyan directs the orchestra at Cedarcrest Junior High, Christopher Burns leads the orchestra at Spanaway Junior High, Jerilynn Harris-Kilgore is the orchestra director at Bethel and Cougar Mountain junior highs, Andrea Klouse directs the orchestra at Liberty Junior High, and April Whyte leads the orchestra at Frontier Junior High. Each junior high orchestra performs throughout the year at concerts, contests, and festivals.
HIGH SCHOOL
High school orchestra students have more advanced opportunities to continue their experiences in the orchestra program. Bethel High School students playing a string instrument rehearse and perform under the direction of John Wetherington. Orchestra students who attend Graham-Kapowsin High School work with Christopher Burns. Spanaway Lake High School students are directed by Konstantin Avakyan. Students may also perform a solo or in a small ensemble at the spring solo/ensemble contest, or at the annual orchestra contest and district festival.
