Principal's Message

  •        Fall is here! Take time to notice and appreciate the beautiful colors in the trees, the crisp chill in the morning air, and the silhouette of Mr. Rainier standing above the fog. The smell of smoke reminds me of my walks to my elementary school when I was young and it helps me begin each day with a fresh perspective and a renewed energy.

This year, one area of increased focus at Kapowsin (and across the district) is student attendance. Studies indicate that “students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child’s school career.

A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge” (www.nces.ed.gov). When making appointments or travel plans please reference the district calendar to minimize the impact on your child’s attendance.

In preparation for our first round of student conferences at the end of October, I continue to encourage teachers and families to reach out to each other and establish strong lines of communication. Two-way communication between school and home is a critical component of student success in school. Well-informed parents can provide encouragement and support for their student at home, both academically and socially. Teachers who understand what students’ lives are like outside of the classroom can help foster the level of comfort, support and structure that each child needs to be successful.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents who are volunteering in our classrooms and who have PTA involvement through membership and fundraising. If you would like to become more involved in school please reach out to your student’s teacher, the PTA, or the main office. We appreciate your partnership and support in the education of all of our young Cougars.
