Message from Principal Ramirez about Parent Pick Up:
Good Evening Thompson Families!
As most of you have realized, our parent pick up procedures are extremely challenging this year. In the history of Thompson, we have never had this many families use parent drop-off and pick-up. Due to the high volume of families and traffic, we are finding that we must continue to problem solve the congestion. Please be patient with us. We have a lot going on and it is crucial that we are all on the same page. First and foremost, safety is our number one priority. And this year in particular, we are dealing with two very different safety measures.
1. It is critical that we ensure your child is released to the correct adult.
2. We are also following Covid guidelines with masks and social distancing. For these two reasons, we must work together to ensure we build an effective and safe protocol.
Next, I am going to share a change to our procedures beginning tomorrow, Thursday, September 9th.
Change #1: If you are choosing to wait in line for curbside valet service, please DO NOT BLOCK TRAFFIC on 159th. For the past two days, we are unable to get our school busses through the streets and it is causing severe delays for our bus riders getting home. Many of our kiddos are not getting home until well after 5pm. And a side note: beginning this Friday, we will see even MORE traffic as we will be welcoming SEVEN new classes of TK AND Kindergarteners to the mix. If we think it's congested now, we will have even LONGER wait times come Friday.
Change #2: If you are choosing to park and get out of your car to meet your child on the sidewalk there will be some changes effective immediately. We cannot continue to have groups of families crowding our sidewalks and iron gates. Beginning tomorrow, you will be asked to make a line on the sidewalk along the iron gate. I will personally be out there with clearly marked boundaries and support to help keep parents clear of our exit doors. When you child arrives out front, all students will be lined up by grade levels.
We will NOT release any children to any adult without getting a visual of you and ensure you are the correct adult. We will have students keep watch through the gate. When they see you, they will raise their hand and wait for a staff member to hand deliver them to you.
Fair warning: This will significantly delay getting your child to you. Please be patient with us.
Like I had mentioned earlier, we have to work together to ensure this is a safe and efficient process for all of us. I strongly encourage you to have your child ride the bus to and from school if you are within our bussing zones. The fewer cars waiting in our pick-up line, the faster busses can get in and out and have your child delivered to your home.
I am hopeful we can work together to solve this challenging issue at our school. Please feel free to reach out to our main office with any questions or concerns.
