Emergency Substitute Training Program

  • The posting of Emergency Substitute Teacher will open on May 1.  Please apply on/after that date for full consideration. If you would like to discuss this opportunity to determine whether you can be included outside the typical training offered (e.g., those completing student teacher assignments), please contact either Debi Christensen or Jodi Gregory at 253-683-6004 or 253-683-6020.

Have you thought of becoming a substitute teacher, yet are lacking a WA State teaching credential? No problem! Bethel School District is looking for people who want to make a difference and are excited about joining Team Bethel as Emergency Substitute Teachers during the 2016/17 school year.

    Minimum criteria to apply:

    • Experience working with children
    • Verifiable college degree (AA or higher)
    • Availability and desire to work

Current substitute daily rates: full day $140 / half day $70

With our District’s support, you can apply to obtain your Emergency Substitute Teaching certificate through the State of Washington. This on-call teaching position organizes and implements lesson plans during a teacher’s absence to provide valuable learning experiences for students.

Prior to your first substituting assignment, the District will provide a full day of paid group training to new emergency substitute guest teachers. The training is designed to benefit you in being successful in the areas of classroom management, lesson plan implementation, school and district procedures, educator professionalism and standards of conduct, and legal issues. Administrative Interns with an educational background will facilitate the class in partnership with Human Resources.

    Process Steps:

    1. Submit your online application at jobs.bethelsd.org a minimum of six weeks prior to the class session you’d like to attend (see tentative 2017/18 dates on the right side of this page).
    2. Upon application pre-screening verification, you will receive an email invitation to interview, and then participate in a brief interview with Human Resources.
    3. Following a successful interview, you will receive instructions to complete your background check (e.g., 10-digit fingerprints) and to apply for State certification.
    4. Once your fingerprints have cleared and your certificate has been issued, you will be invited to the district ESC to complete and submit your hiring forms in an onboarding appointment.
    5. Next, you will attend a paid one-day training from the choices below.
    6. Finally, you will begin accepting classroom substitute teaching assignments.

Questions: Call or email Debi Christensen, Human Resources Director, at 253.683.6004 or dlchristen@bethelsd.org.
