Middle School Library Mission Statement

The mission of the Bethel School District Middle School Library Program is to foster a love for reading and learning by ensuring that students and staff have access to a variety of information and resources that meet their individual interests and needs. The Bethel School District Middle School Library Program will also strive to teach students how to be effective and ethical users of technology and information.

What is Battle of the Books?

The Middle School Battle of the Books is a voluntary, district-wide reading competition. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to read award-nominated books while preparing for an engaging competition.

This opportunity is for teams of 6th-8th grade students.
There are 13 middle grade books.
Students form teams of 3-4 members.
Students select at least 4 books to read from the list.
Librarians create questions based on character, setting and plot for each book.
Each participating school sends a winning team to the district Battle.

Why participate?

How are books chosen?

Books on the list are often nominated for awards such as Sasquatch, Young Reader’s Choice Award, Evergreen, Junior Library Guild, Project Lit and Newbery.
Librarians read and research the books for text complexity, reading level, genre, content and age recommendations.
Librarians meet to discuss and decide which books should be included. Making sure choices support inclusivity for all.
Topics may cover many areas:
- Belonging
- Neurodivergent individuals and ways of thinking
- Racial and cultural diversity
- Diversity of social, political, economic or religious viewpoints
- Gender representation or sexual orientation
- Social Emotional Learning
