Instructional Model

Instructional Model

All eligible Multilingual Learners (MLLs) receive targeted language development services from ELL-endorsed teachers at their home schools.

Our district implements a collaborative teaching model, where MLL teachers partner with general education teachers to support students’ English language development while ensuring access to rigorous, grade-level content.

Elementary K-5:

Supportive Mainstream

Consistent, focused, and effective language development instruction is provided to elementary Multilingual  Learners through a collaborative teaching model. Students in this model access grade-level academic content through participation in their mainstream classrooms. Language instruction is developed and monitored by teachers who have been trained in the field of second language acquisition and instructional strategies. Instruction occurs either individually or in small groups within the mainstream classroom (push-in) with the focus on supporting English language development.

Secondary 6-12:

English Language Development course

Our Secondary  Schools offer an English Language Development (ELD) course. This course integrates English language development with academic content learning using English as the language of instruction. ELD courses are in addition to ML Learner’s mainstream English Language Arts. Students in this course are typically newcomers (in the US less than 18 months) or emerging bilinguals. The instruction is delivered by teachers specially trained in the field of second language acquisition and instructional strategies to support both English language development and academic grade level content.

Supportive Mainstream

Secondary schools also offer language development instruction to English Learners through a push-in/co-teach model known as Supportive Mainstream.
