FAQ

What if my child is ready for kindergarten, but turns 5 years old just after the August 31 cut-off?

A special application and entrance testing process exists to grant kindergarten enrollment to a student that turns 5 between the dates of September 1 and October 31 and who demonstrate significantly advanced scores in multiple domains when compared to kindergarten peers.   The process for this early entrance request is:

PHASE 1: NOTIFICATION & APPLICATION

  1. Notification: Contact the Assessment & Highly Capable Office at 253.800.2090 by June 1 of the preceding year to receive the phase 1 application documents.
  2. Application Documents: Families will complete and submit the following application documents by June 16:
    1. Application of Interest
    2. Preschool teacher referral
  3. Phase 1 Determination: By June 30, families will receive notification of whether the student qualifies to move on to Phase 2.

PHASE 2:  TESTING & PLACEMENT

  1. Schedule Testing:  The assessment office will coordinate the scheduling for student testing to occur in early August.

  2. Administer Testing: Students will be given a 1 on 1 assessment covering the domains of mental ability, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, visual discrimination, social/emotional development, and language development.  Parents will remain outside of the testing room.

  3. Parent Notification of Placement Decision: Parents will be notified of the placement decision by August 31 or before school starts (whichever comes first). All decisions are final with no appeal process.

  4. Review of Student Progress: Student progress with this placement will be reviewed no later than the fall parent-teacher conferences.
