  • Principal’s Message 2/19/20

This is a short week, but the expectations are still high. Just a reminder that students should not have backpacks in the hallways after 1st period. They may carry a cinch sack into classes. Students who carry backpacks during the day risk getting a lunch detention for failure to follow school rules.

BACKPACKS:  Just a reminder that students should not have backpacks in the hallways after 1st period. This includes taking it to 7th period. They may carry a cinch sack into classes. Students who carry backpacks during the day risk getting a lunch detention for failure to follow school rules. If a student believes they will be late for classes or the bus, they can speak to campus safety to find a solution.

Teacher of the Year Nominations (repeat):  The deadline for Teacher of the Year nominations for 2021 is March 1. Why not take a minute to nominate one of your child’s teachers as TEACHER OF THE YEAR!  Liberty is full of teachers that deserve to be the TOY! OSPI runs the Teacher of the Year selection process. Feel free to post this link on any of your social media Teacher of the Year Nomination

Phone Numbers Changing (repeat):  All Bethel phone numbers are changing prefixes. We will no longer be 683. We will be 800. The majority of staff will retain their same last four digits. For example, 253-683-6000 will become 253-800-6000. From now until April 1, 2020, both the old and new numbers will work. Please note the change in all of your saved school phone numbers.

    DISTRICT NOTEWORTHY NEWS:

    • Drive Safely! (from Superintendent Seigel’s letter to the community): As you know, this is a dark and dangerous time of the year for driving, with increased risks for our students as they travel to and from school. We are only halfway through the school year and we have already had 10 school bus accidents involving cars hitting buses. Fortunately, no students have been hurt so far. Almost all of these crashes were caused by cars running into the back of a bus (and the other was from the side!). In comparison, for all of last year, there were 9 accidents and only 4 the year before that. This upward trend is very concerning. In addition, this year we've had three students hit by cars on their way to school, while walking or riding a bicycle. Driving requires our full attention at all times. Our 21,000 students going to school each day, often in areas without sidewalks and street lights, deserve everyone's full attention to safety.
    • Cheer Teams at State: This weekend cheer teams from Bethel, Graham-Kapowsin and Spanaway Lake competed in the State Cheer Championships! BHS came in 1st place in 2A/3A Coed Game Day, and 2nd place in 1A/2A/3A/4A Coed NT. GKHS scored 3rd place in 2A/3A/4A Small and 6th place in 4A Large Game Day. SLHS came in 3rd place in 1A/3A/4A Stomp. Congratulations to the students and coaches!
    • Esports: The idea of competitive video gaming might seem a bit odd, but Esports has become one of the fastest growing – and most lucrative -- sports in the country. Now Spanaway Lake High School and the Pierce County Skills Center have introduced afterschool Esports clubs that will compete with other schools in the region. And it’s not all just fun and games. More than 170 colleges in the United States now offer Esports programs that have given out more than $16 million in scholarships and financial aid. https://www.facebook.com/BethelSD/videos/707271389677625/
    • PCSC trains with Graham Fire: This week, Fire Science students from the Pierce County Skills Center trained with Graham Fire and Rescue on the property that will soon be home to the new Bethel High School. See the students in action in this short video and mark your calendars for February 27th, when Graham Fire will burn the old house to the ground to make way for the new school. We will share safe places to watch from in the coming weeks. https://www.facebook.com/BethelSD/videos/1049490552087019/
    • Black History Month: In honor of Black History Month, our school district’s Facebook page is celebrating some of the amazing men and women who have contributed so immensely to this country. Learn more at facebook.com/BethelSD/
