Welcome Back!

  • As we get ready for another successful year in our classrooms, I am reminded of the dramatic progress we are making in both our graduation rates and test scores. All the indications are that our graduation rates went up again this year, and will remain well above the state average. The preliminary data for the SBA testing indicates that we have significantly improved, and are at or above the state average at many grade levels.

Bethel is an innovative school district, and this year, our voter-approved Digital Learning iPad Initiative will put devices in the hands of 9,000 elementary students, along with our middle and high school students. These tools will allow teachers to enhance student learning and engage students in ways that will help them be college and career ready in our global, technology-rich economy.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of Summer Institute, Bethel's unique professional development opportunity for teachers and staff. Summer Institute gives our staff the chance to learn from regional and national experts, as well as each other, as they strive to be the best they can be for our students. This year’s classes included training to deepen the understanding of equity, as well as the impact of trauma and poverty on children.

Of course, we can’t continue to be successful without the help of our community.  The last time we had a bond to build new schools and remodel old ones was in 2006.  Now, more than a decade later, our community has grown significantly, and that growth shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Our community-led Long Range Facilities Task Force is currently studying the situation and will present their recommendations to the school board this fall.

As our district continues its journey of learning and improvement, please know that we all are partners in the success of our students. Only by working together can we continue to improve the opportunities for them.

Welcome back. We have a great year ahead of us!
